About the service

Dr. Sunny Kang, MD, FRCPC, is a Royal College–certified psychiatrist providing virtual outpatient psychiatric care to adults in Calgary and the surrounding areas. Appointments are by secure video (telephone if needed); appointment links are sent to patients by email. Patients must be physically located in Alberta during their appointment.

Care is goal-directed — I work on the issue your patient identifies, with the aim of resolving it where that's possible and reducing its impact where it isn't. Once we reach that point, your patient is discharged back to your care with a clear written maintenance plan.

This is an adult psychiatric practice. In my final year of residency I chose child and adolescent electives, as I have a particular interest in transition-age care — which is why patients 16 and older are welcome.

Consult + treatment

Assessment and treatment of the presenting issue until it is resolved or well managed, then discharge back to you with a maintenance plan

Consultation-only

A one-time assessment and opinion while you retain management (indicate on the referral form)

Conditions seen

  • Depression, including perinatal
  • Anxiety disorders, including health anxiety
  • OCD
  • PTSD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • ADHD
  • Psychotic disorders — where suitable for virtual outpatient care: medication readjustment, relapse prevention in stable patients, or a single circumscribed delusional belief in an otherwise well-functioning patient
  • Comorbid substance use — with a primary mood, anxiety, or ADHD presentation

Not exhaustive. If a patient doesn't fit neatly, or you're not sure, send the referral anyway — in most cases I can help, and if I can't, I will tell you why.

Outside scope (please do not refer)

  • Emergencies — this is not a crisis service; anyone needing hospitalization, in-person assessment, or same-day care (e.g., acute psychosis or mania, imminent safety concerns) belongs with the ED or Access Mental Health. Chronic or passive suicidal ideation does not preclude referral; only imminent risk does
  • Primary addiction, and substance use requiring withdrawal management
  • IMEs, and disability, insurance, AISH, or accommodation paperwork — I will give you my opinion in the consultation letter, but the forms themselves stay with your office

What your patient can expect

Appointments are by secure video from home — no app to install, no travel. Your patient will receive their appointment link and intake materials by email after booking. Care is collaborative and goal-directed: we work on what matters most to your patient, and once things are resolved or well managed they return to you with a clear plan.

Patients in crisis

Please direct patients in crisis to the nearest Emergency Department, 811 (Health Link), 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline — call or text), or Access Mental Health (403-943-1500). Under 18: Alberta Children's Hospital Emergency.
