About the service

Dr. Sunny Kang, MD, FRCPC, is a Royal College–certified psychiatrist providing virtual outpatient psychiatric care to adults in Calgary and the surrounding areas. Appointments are by secure video (telephone if needed); appointment links are sent to patients by email. Patients must be physically located in Alberta during their appointment.

Care is episodic and goal-directed — designed to return your patient to you once stable. Most patients are seen for 3–6 months (longer where clinically warranted), then discharged back to your care with a clear written maintenance plan. Prescribing — including stimulants — transfers back once the regimen is simple to maintain, and re-referral is always welcome if things change.

Particular interest in young adults and transition-age care — adolescents 16+ are welcome, alongside general adult work.

Consult + treatment

A full episode of care (~3–6 months), then discharge back to you

Consultation-only

A one-time assessment and opinion while you retain management (indicate on the referral form)

Conditions seen

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • ADHD
  • Psychotic disorders — where suitable for virtual outpatient care (e.g., medication readjustment, relapse prevention in stable patients)
  • Comorbid substance use (with a primary mood, anxiety, or ADHD presentation; not severe active use requiring withdrawal management)

Outside scope (please do not refer)

  • Emergencies and crisis presentations — this is not a crisis service; patients requiring hospitalization, in-person assessment, or same-day intervention (e.g., acute psychosis or mania, imminent safety concerns) belong with the ED or Access Mental Health
  • Primary addiction
  • IMEs and disability/insurance forms — an opinion will appear in the consult letter, but forms remain with your office

What your patient can expect

Appointments are by secure video from home — no app to install, no travel. Your patient will receive their appointment link and intake materials by email after booking. Care is collaborative and time-limited: we work toward specific goals, then your patient returns to you with a clear plan.

Patients in crisis

Please direct patients in crisis to the nearest Emergency Department, 811 (Health Link), 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline — call or text), or Access Mental Health (403-943-1500).
